James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter have known they were some kind of band since their first year at Hogwarts. Being the only 1st year Gryffindor boys, they naturally became friends sharing a dorm together. It was the beginning of the second year, they officially dubbed themselves the Marauders, dedicated to creating trouble. Their first detention served together was not a week from the beginning of school after they proceeded to flood the prefect’s bathroom and shoot off fireworks inside. Though very bright students, the boys, particularly, James and Sirius, seem to study only to learn spells to create mayhem. Other past times included making fun of James’s ridiculous pursuit of Lily Evans and it was also during this time of year, they began to start singling out Severus Snape.
It was Sirius who first noticed Remus’s monthly disappeance. When confronted, he told the others that simply his mother was very ill and he went to St. Mungo’s each month to visit her. However, the werewolf transformation was extremely hard on Remus already and he grew use to never being without his friends. His nights spent in the shack made for him just outside of Hogsmeade were painful and lonely. After a full moon where he injured himself severly as a werewolf, his animal instincts having no output, he broke down and told the others about his “furry little problem” a few weeks before school finished.
The other boys were a little weary at first, unsure how to react to Remus. But quickly they set out to find a way to help their friend. It was James who first suggested the idea of them becoming animagus. Peter and Sirius were skeptical initially. The more they researched the possibility, the more they rejected the notion. After all, a bunch of second boys couldn’t possibly learn animagi by themselves. One night as James wandered the corridors, he stumbled across the Room of Requirement. Inside, he found a secret practice area, graphs of skeletal structures on animals and humans as well as hundreds of books on transfiguration, specializing in animagi. Suddenly, the idea became that much more of a option and the three made a promise to try until they suceeded and now meet in the room at least once a week.
Sirius and Remus have also developed an idea for creating a map that will show all of Hogwarts as well as the location of everyone in it. Though Remus is mainly the one actually inventing the spells to make it, since he is the best at enchantments out of the group, all are actively participating in the process.
During the summer of 1973, strange attacks began to occur in the wizarding world. The first month, only three were killed. Though their murders had obviously been done by magical means, it was assumed that there was simply a rogue wizard. But as the summer continued, more and more muggles were either attacked or murdered. Whispers and rumors have suddenly started circulating about a group of dark wizards and their leader who they call their Lord. The most recent and probably most shocking of these attacks occurred the week before school started. While Hogwarts students were busy preparing for the new school year, a dead muggle corpse appeared in the atrium of the Ministry of Magic. Shining on the ceiling was a vaporous green skull.
